Company - Who We Are

History

Turbo Power Systems origins can be traced back to 1986 at Imperial College, London where Professor Colin Besant and his team were developing patented axial flux technology for use in high speed generators.

Such was the potential Professor Besant established The Turbo Genset Company (TGC) in 1993 to transform the achievements of Imperial College into a commercial reality.

The company grew and developed at such a rate as to be launched and listed on the London Stock Exchange in July 2000 and on the Toronto Stock Exchange August 2000.

In July 2001, Turbo Genset acquired the Gateshead based company Intelligent Power Systems (I-Power, which dates from 1976) to provide the power electronics for the company’s generator systems as well as expanding its power electronics technology into the rail industry.

The success of the business has now been reinforced with extensive investment in cutting edge skills and facilities. Group management has now created tried and tested technical development planning systems coupled with highly efficient manufacturing facilities enabling the company to continually stay competitive and at the leading edge of electrical machine and power electronics design.

In July 2006 Turbo Genset and I-Power were renamed Turbo Power Systems in order to show the new direction of the company in the turbo machinery and power electronics markets.
