CharIN’s recently published MCS whitepaper identifies interoperability as the most significant barrier to scaling electric fleet e HGV adoption. At TPS we’re forging powerful collaborations with partners like Volvo Trucks UK to unlock the interoperability challenge and support MCS to scale.
Recommending that all MCS EVSE (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment) must support the full operating range of 400–1250 V DC and cautioning against the development of MCS hardware that falls below, the whitepaper warns:
Past experience of the e-Mobility markets has shown that the operating voltage range compatibility is a must to avoid incompatibility between vehicles and infrastructure. Therefore, EVSE manufacturers are strongly advised against supporting development of MCS EVSE that can’t support the full range of 400-1250 volts.
If it’s not future ready, it’s high risk.
To stay ahead in the fast-evolving e-Mobility landscape, future-ready infrastructure is non-negotiable. Because history has shown us that anything less risks costly incompatibility between vehicles and charging stations.
And for EVSE manufacturers, designing equipment that doesn’t support the full voltage range of 400-1250 risks frailty in infrastructure and threatens effective EV rollout. Not forgetting missing out on tomorrow’s market.
Compatibility can only come from building the right capability into the infrastructure from the start.
Shaping this capability stems from powerful collaboration, like the hands-on interoperability testing we’ve been running with Volvo Trucks UK using our VELOX Ultra-Rapid DC Chargers.
Our VELOX m chargers have been developed to empower depot operators to invest with confidence, offering a future-proof solution that supports battery outputs from 150 to 1,250 V, all major charging standards including MCS, and bi-directional V2X functionality. With up to 1.2 MW capacity and modular design, they adapt to current fleet needs and enable seamless upgrades—no extra power electronics needed when switching to MCS.
Their expandable configuration integrates easily with our game changing SMART FLEET DC Grid, allowing for added battery storage, embedded generation, and additional chargers as needed. This scalable system supports multi-scheme connections and paves the way to reach and exceed the MCS standard of 3.75 MW / 3,000 A.
